A 1960's sci-fi action adventure series set in the 23rd century based around the crew of the USS Enterprise, representing the United Federation of Planets (including earth) on a five-year mission in outer space to explore new worlds, seek new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no one has gone before. The Enterprise is commanded by handsome and brash Captain James Tiberius "Jim" Kirk. Kirk's two best friends are Commander Spock (last name unpronounceable to humans) the ship's half-human/half-Vulcan Science Officer and First/Executive Officer (i.e. second-in-command) from the planet Vulcan, and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Leonard H. "Bones" McCoy. They along with a crew of approximately 430, including helmsman Lieutenant Hikaru Kato Sulu, navigator Ensign Pavel Andreievich Chekov, Officer Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, and chief engineer Lieutenant Commander Christopher Jorgensen "Scotty" Scott -- confront strange alien races, friendly and hostile alike, as they explore unknown worlds. the Enterprise battles aliens, megalomaniac computers, time paradoxes, psychotic murderers, and even Khan. The series is known for looking at then (1960's) hot topics such as Sex, War, God, Religion, Politics and Racism and other things that make up the human condition through a lens of the future. The 80 episode TV series which was produced from 1966 to 1969 has now cult characters and has fans all over the world. It is the 23rd century and together with the crew of the Federation starship Enterprise we travel across the galaxy to meet new and exciting life forms on distant planets. The 80 episode TV series which was produced from 1966 to 1969 has now cult character and has fans all over the world. Yes, STAR TREK, the original series, AKA, TOS, is the BEST! All sequels/prequel series are not even in the same galaxy! That includes the acclaimed THE NEXT GENERATION and DEEP SPACE NINE, both of which I think are overrated. TNG certainly appeared to me more technologically advanced than TOS in it's time (late 80s), but now, it looks as dated as TOS, which strangely seems less dated in some ways. And DS9 perhaps was more like TOS in terms of character depth, but no one on that show could hold a candle to the original crew (and stories) of the U.S.S. Enterprise!

The groundbreaking STAR TREK premiered in 1966. Really, it is the first of it's kind: an amalgation of sci-fi, drama, action, satire, comedy, and pathos, TOS broke the mold AND set the standard for not only sci-fi shows, but a lot of other TV shows in general. One of the earliest examples of the "ensemble", TOS provided a provocative mix of unique characters and stories that stimulated the viewer and drew them in. I still find many of the episodes fascinating (for you, Mr. Spock!) today. There are a lot of shows made since STAR TREK that fail to hold my attention for even ONE episode!

The main thing that still resonates for me are the strong characters: Capt. James T. Kirk (played by the severely underrated William Shatner, who superbly translated the iconic, commanding Starship captain to the screen), First Officer Spock (played brilliantly by Emmy-nominated Leonard Nimoy, one of the most original characters ever on TV), and Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (played with everlasting gusto and verve by DeForrest Kelley). I mean, these actors were BORN to play these parts! Just perfect casting! But the BIG thing that TOS has over all of the sequels TNG, DS9, VOYAGER, and ENTERPRISE are the character interactions! Yeah, those other series have several good-to-great characters (except ENTERPRISE, perhaps!), but none of the cast of those series have the amazing ensemble chemistry of the original STAR TREK cast! NONE of them!

And the supporting cast of TOS wasn't too bad! Bringing up the rear were Chief Engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (the excellent James Doohan), Communications Officer Uhura (groundbreaker Nichelle Nichols), Lts. Sulu (stalwart George Takei) and Chekov (engaging Walter Koenig), and Nurse Chapel (sexy, dignified Majel Barrett).

And the casting of actors from extremely different backgrounds did not seem gimmicky! Amazingly, in 1966, you'd think that having such a racially diverse cast would seem like political correctness gone awry! But all these casting choices were perfect! The writing, acting, and storytelling were key aspects that keep the show fresh to this day.

Some of the best episodes from the first two seasons include "Amok Time", "City on the Edge of Forever", "Balance of Terror", "The Galileo Seven", "The Doomsday Machine", "The Trouble with Tribbles", "The Naked Time", "Operation Annihilate", and "The Immunity Syndrome. Upon careful re-evaluation, even the much-maligned Season 3 has more good and provocative eps than people think, including "Is There No Truth in Beauty", "The Tholian Web", "The Empath", and "All Our Yesterdays". The masterful Gene Roddenberry created this incredibly influential, iconic, and cult series which belongs amongst the best of all time! Due to my age, I didn't begin watching "Star Trek TOS" until the mid 1970s, and, they were re-runs, of course. I have to say, I love this classic as much, maybe even more, than I loved it then.

This show has everything - great characters who interact well with one another; great villains; great costumes; great settings; great and colorful skies, backgrounds, and, props; great sound-effects; great music, much of which is very pleasant and soothing; great, well-written stories that are parallel to the true-life events, even controversial events, of the late 1960s, and, they are well-acted; great action scenes; great suspense; great horror and terror; great, great, great everything...except for the studio clowns who forced this 'great' show off the air after only three seasons, and, later lived to regret it.

This show also has beautiful women who wear sexy mini-skirt uniforms; beautiful alien women in sexy outfits of all sorts...even the green chick is attractive. I, personally, love the clothing that women in the 1960s wore, especially the way the clothing accentuated their figures, and, USS Enterprise uniforms do exactly that. I also loved their hair styles, make-up, etc. If you like all of this, watch "Mad Men." It, too, has sexy sixties women in sexy, sexy outfits.

This is just a fabulous television series that died-out much too soon; but, was so 'great,' that it spawned a series of movies and other television series based upon it.

To me, "Star Trek TOS" is the Grandfather, the Master, of grandiose Sci-Fi as it shows how people in real life (usually politicians or governments), mimicked by certain characters in the show, aren't as great as they feel themselves to be; and, like those people in real life, are eventually toppled.

I became so tired of waiting for this to be shown again on TV that I went out and bought the entire DVD series. It comes with all kinds of extras, interviews, and, behind-the-scenes films; as well as personal films shot by actors.

Anyone who's a Sci-Fi fan and hasn't seen this classic show; or, doesn't own the DVD set...your Sci-Fi indulgence isn't complete! You gotta see this! :)

RIP Leonard Nimoy; DeForest Kelley; James Doohan; and, Gene Roddenberry. The Vulcan hand salute was improvised by Nimoy on the set of "Amok Time." As a child, his religious Jewish parents often took Nimoy to the local synagogue where he had seen people making this hand gesture while saying prayers--a handsign done with both hands by the descendants of Aaron (called cohen, plural cohanim) when the congregation of a Jewish synagogue is being blessed with the "May the Lord bless you and keep you." This inspired Nimoy to create the Vulcan hand salute. It takes place in the 23rd Century, the original pilot episode titled "The Cage" takes place in 2254 A.D. while the rest of the series takes place from the years 2266-2269 A.D. The "T" stands for Tiberius therefore his full name is James Tiberius Kirk. Yes and according to the late Gene Roddenberry, in 1966 before the second Star Trek pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before had aired. Network executives were concerned about Spock having pointy ears because the shape made him appear to look "too diabolical and Satanic looking." And along with their other request that the Enterprise not have a woman as second in command. And at the time actress Majel Barrett was dating Mr. Roddenberry so he was able to work out a comprise much to everybody's satisfaction. He said, "so I married the woman and kept the alien because I could not have done it the other way around." He worked in summer stock theater. In 1969 after learning of ST Trek: TOS's cancellation, Shatner was in somewhat of a dire financial situation due to his then wife's filing for divorce and being suddenly unemployed. He contacted his agent who got him work in summer stock theater for the next few months and he bought a used pickup truck with camper shell attached. The sudden reality of no income, bills, his impending divorce and being low on funds made him realize that he couldn't afford even economy style motels while working. He then set off driving to each and every location to work as a cast member in Some Like It Hot and the truck with camper shell actually paid off in the long run. He lived this way from memorial day weekend up through labor day weekend that year when his summer job ended. And from then on William Shatner was able to keep busy as an actor working steadily in various prime time television shows which paid well and he was able to stay afloat financially.
